Why do I need security cameras?
Security cameras are about prevention. Not to mention their amazing deterrent power to stop the bad guys from even trying. With today's technology and advancements, computerized monitoring and security systems have become a necessity and part of our daily life. Until few years ago having such security systems was a luxury and was mainly used by large corporations and the well to do. However, these systems have dramatically dropped in price and have become such commodity items that today all sectors of community can enjoy their immense benefits.

You spend thousands of dollars just for your car insurance. So why not pay portion of that amount for a lifetime peace of mind for the security of your most valuable possessions?

You can install these security systems in your business to prevent theft, vandalism, burglaries, shop lifting, false claims, lawsuits, sexual harassment and unnecessary workers compensation claims. You can install them in your home to prevent child abuse by a nanny, abuse of the elderly by a care taker, theft by a house keeper or burglary by a stranger.
Whatever the reason might be, Rochester Fix My PC, Laptop & HDTV is here to help you with all your computer network and security camera needs. Back to top.

How to choose a Computer Network & Security camera system?
There are lots of  computer network surveillance camera systems in the market. Which one is suitable for you? Below is some information you can use to educate yourself. However please don't hesitate to contact us to schedule a free site survey, free consultation and a free quote.

  1. Bullet camera - are small, and very popular. Most of them are weather proof and day / night capable. They are not vandal proof. They are very popular in outdoor applications because of their shape it's easy for the manufacture to design it with IR (infrared) and weatherproof.
  2. Pan Tilt Zoom – Similar to other cameras but have also remote control which enable you to change the position and zoom in when viewing in real time into the object. They also have a programmed or automatic mode where they can aim at a predefined location for predefined time and move to the next programmed point when an operator is not available. These cameras are not very popular because they are very expensive and most effective when they are operated by an operator.
  3. Dome Camera: A mini camera is built inside a dome-size plastic obscure protector. Suitable for installation on the ceiling or wall. Popular in indoor applications because of their shape they blend into the ceiling or the wall they are attached to. Some of the dome cameras are available in black or white to fit the surrounding colors. Even though most of them are not weather proof or night vision, some are vandal proof and can take a hit from a hammer up to 5 lbs
  4. Box Camera - have advantage over other types of cameras because the lens can be changed easily, that gives you the ability to set the zoom exactly to the object you want to capture. For example they are good to capture register cash machines as you can capture the keys and the screen and avoid theft by employees. They are mostly used indoor but can be used outdoor as well if placed in weather proof / water resistant housing. Housing for extreme weather conations is also available as they have built in heater and cooling fan deepens on the temperature.
  5. Motion Activated Camera: The motion sensors in these cameras enable the switcher to automatically change to the live video feed from any camera that detects motion and will start recording to DVR or VCR and continue to record until no motion is detected for 30 seconds. This saves lots of storage space on your recording equipment. It also makes playback much easier because you are only watching video with action, and you won't have to fast-forward through hours of video with no activity.
  6. Hidden or Pinhole Camera. Some are as small as a walnut with lens opening of 1 mm. It can be hidden behind any hole larger than 1 mm. Hidden cameras can be found in a variety of shapes from smoke detector to a teddy bear. None of them is night vision because even though the IR light is not seen to the human eye but when the led's are on, their color is red and can be detected if looking at them.

There are other type of security cameras such as Network IP, super wide angel and Verifocal that are not listed here. Please call us for more information. Back to top.

What is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)?
As many advantages of DVR digital recording has become apparent, older technologies such as VCR or DVD recorders are hardly used for computer network surveillance systems any more. With new PC IP based DVR systems you get many benefits such as:

  • Continuous recording without the need to change any media.
  • Capability to access and view the live feed from any computer around the world.
  • Easy to scan recorded video and find what you are looking for.
  • Recorded digital data can easily be captured or transferred to other computers or media.
  • Use of software to program the way you capture and process the data with a variety of quality and performance options and extra features such as motion-detection and email alerts.

What is CCTV used for?
CCTV (Ced-circuit television) is used like a video camera to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of MONITORS. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point wireless links. CCTV is often used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, casinos, airports, military installations, and convenience stores.
CCTV equipment may be used to observe parts of a process from a central control room; when, for example, the environment is not suitable for humans. CCTV systems may operate continuously or only as required to monitor a particular event. A more advanced form of CCTV, utilizing Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), provides recording for possibly many years.

When should I use a hidden or Pinhole Camera?
Pinhole camera can be used for a wide variety of purposes in offices or at home, for security, surveillance or fun. Pinhole camera is an ideal discreet surveillance camera for the office or home security system, and a must tool for the novice or professional detective. Use it as a nanny camera when you are away from home to make sure that your children or elderly family members are properly taken care of. Due to the small viewing diameter, pinhole camera can film through very small holes and light-weaved clothing. Basically, the camera can be hidden inside any objects such as clocks, radios, tissue boxes or other household, office items or body worn. This keeps the camera covert for surveillance purpose. Should I buy a color or a B/W camera?
If you use the camera in an environment where the light condition is very low, it is recommended that you buy a B/W camera. If a color camera is used under low light condition, the video obtained will be ce to B/W anyway. Buy a color camera for a better view if the light condition is fair. Back to top

What camera's to use for night and low light areas?
Night vision cameras - there are 3 ways to improve video in low light.

  1. Color cameras switch automatically to black and white during low light to improve the image quality and for sharp image.
  2. WDR which automatically balances the contrast in different areas of the picture to view dark areas, same way as you changes the contrast in your TV screen. It is not very effective but is more expensive.
  3. Infra Red - uses Infra Red (IR) LED's that make a light in a frequency that the human eye cannot see and the camera can, therefore it is not required to have high power IR light to view in the dark using camera than to view the same object using regular light. The number of the LED's and the power of each LED determines the distance of the captured image. Back to top

Should I buy a Wired Camera or a Wireless Security Camera?
The advantages of wireless camera are that (a) it is convenient to be installed in those locations where wiring is difficult, if not impossible; (b) it can be moved to different locations easily, as often as you like; (c) it can be hidden inside a moving object like inside your cloth, cap, briefcase or carrying bag etc. The disadvantages are: (a) video stream may be disturbed or influenced by other moving objects or other strong radio frequencies. A wired camera is more stable in this respect. (b) video/audio transmission is limited within the prescribed transmission range. These disadvantages will not occur to a wired camera.

To overcome the disadvantages of wireless camera, you may:
(a) Buy those wireless models with higher frequency transmission band at least 1.2GHz or above; (b) If you need to take video from the wireless camera a long way from the receiver, or there are walls, metallic or steel obstacles between the wireless camera and the receiver, buy a wireless model with higher transmission power, that is, a transmitter with longer transmission distance; (c) Using a high gain antenna for the transmitter or receiver will improve signal transmission/reception. Overall, the video/audio signals from a wired camera are more stable than a wireless camera. Back to the top

How to choose a suitable lens for the camera?
Lens with fixed focal length:
To choose a suitable lens for your security camera, you need first to determine how far you want to monitor the scene. A 4mm lens will give a 72 degree visual angle of view for a person's face detail in about 30 feet. This will be adequate for most home or small office computer surveillance systems. Based on this calculation, a 8mm lens will give a 40 degree visual angle and zoom in 2 times of the view in the same distance. Accordingly, a 16mm lens will give a 20 degree visual angle and zoom in about 4 times of the view in the same distance.

Varifocal lens
If you need to change the monitoring distance at times, you may choose a varifocal lens instead of lens with fixed focal length. With a few simple adjustments of the lens, you will be able to zoom in and zoom out and focus a clear picture of the scene. There are various focal ranges offered by the varifocal lens, i.e. 3~8mm, 8~15mm etc.

Auto iris lens:
An auto iris lens is a lens that automatically adjusts the lens aperture based on the strength of the incoming light source. If the security camera is installed in the office, you probably don't need an auto iris lens because the light source is stable. If the camera is installed outdoor, you may need an auto iris lens because the light source may change through the day. Back to the top

Important Advice

Before You Choose A Repair Technician

*Ask for proof of qualifications ! (Ask your repair person to show you why they are qualified to service your item).

*Ask for proof of certifications! (There are hundreds of repair shops who have no certifications nor do they have any right to service your item). At Fix My PC, e over 150 lifetime certifications to back up the comprehensive line of services and support option offered; and e serviced hundreds of items just like yours.

*Ask for proof of at least three previous repair jobs they have completed.

*Ask for proof of at least three references with phone numbers and call at least one for authenticity.

Before You Pay Anyone

*Again, ASK FOR CERTIFICATIONS & PLEASE TAKE HEED TO OUR ADVICE! ( Do not let an unqualified and uncertified person who may have failed at everything else in life service your item. Without credentials, they can pose a high risk of to your item).

*Ask, DO THEY HAVE A PUBLIC SERVICE CENTER? Fix My PC service center is located at 1379 WEST RIDGE ROAD (WE ARE MOVING TO A NEW LOCATION DECEMBER 31st. It is 1379 Wets Ridge Road across from Home Depot). We offer 24/7 call support. ( It is never a good idea to go to a house, basement, or garage of someone who claim to be a repair man. Why put yourself at risk of danger, scam, and liability?)..

*GET A written CONTRACT with a price quote and PROOF they are a LEGAL BUSINESS ( Tax ID Number).

Without the above items and practices, You have no legal obligation to pay them.

You BECOME the employer and you can be found responsible for any injuries or loses they suffer while working on your electronics.

Thats Right!

For example, if they simply fall on your front walk you are responsible. If they so much as cut their finger and need stickes the same rules apply.
